The Norfolk Broads History
The Norfolk Broads were created hundreds of years ago by medieval turf cutters, who gradually dug huge holes in the ground to gather peat for fuel. They can’t have imagined the unique landscape that would be formed when the pits eventually flooded. Today, the Broads has National Park status, to protect its natural beauty and to ensure that the area can be enjoyed by all.
The shallow lakes or ”broads“ are set in a wetland landscape of rivers, reedbeds, windmills and grazing meadows. This scenery takes on a whole new meaning when seen from the water itself, whether on a guided boat tour, or at the wheel of a cruiser. Various craft can be hired – from small boats to take out for an hour or more, to self catering
weekend or holiday cruisers for up to 12 people.
