Wroxham, Norfolk Broads
Wroxham has long been known as the capital of The Norfolk Broads. A busy town on the River Bure, it is credited with starting boating holidays on the Norfolk Broads in the the late 1800's.
Although most consider Wroxham to straddle the River Bure in reality Wroxham is only on the western bank with Hoveton on the eastern side. The busy shopping area, dominated by Roy's of Wroxham, is in fact in Hoveton.
Probably the largest collection of boat hire fleets can be found in Wroxham with famous names such as Moores or Wroxham still trading. Many others have long since disappeared, swallowed up over the years by the larger groups.Another famous, long standing, business is Jeckells the sailmaker. Their sail loft is world renowned for their quality sails for both the Broads cruisers and dingys but also increasingly for it's work with ocean going craft.
The bridge over the Bure at Wroxham is typical of the arched structures to be found around the Broads in the past. It is steep and sharp for traffic to negotiate and low and narrow for pleasure craft to pass through. The bridge structure has had to be protected from traffic wear and tear with a 'temporary' bridge laid over the top. Recently a new modern pedestrian bridge has been laid alongside to replace the old, rather rickerty, original.
A visit to Wroxham via train or road would not be the same without a trip on a boat to sample the beautiful and interesting river downstream towards Horning. This can be done by hiring a small day boat by the hour or by a trip on one of the excellent tour craft that start their regular trips from close by the bridge.Food and drink is well catered for in Wroxham with several pubs and hotels providing meals. The Hotel Wroxham is the most central with its waterside terrace and first floor balcony rooms adjacent to the Bridge.
